Dr. Thorkelson, MD is the founder and Medical Director of The Nexus Group, PC. He is board certified in child, adolescent and adult psychiatry. Dr. Thorkelson has received adult psychiatric training from Temple University, as well as a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry from The University of Pittsburgh. At Pitt, he served as Associate Medical Director at the Center for Integrative Medicine; a staff psychiatrist at the John Merck Center for Autism and Developmental Disorders, and a psychiatrist with the Visceral Inflammation and Pain (VIP) Center, which is based in the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. In addition, Dr. Thorkelson is the former Medical Director of Behavioral Health at The Children’s Institute in Pittsburgh.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a large focus for Dr. Thorkelson. He is an expert on TMS treatment in mental health related issues. He has completed advanced training in TMS through both Duke and Harvard medical schools. There are dozens of TMS publications and presentations that are credited to him, and he often collaborates with providers in Germany and Japan to advance this lesser known mental health treatment. Dr. Thorkelson holds a prestigious European TMS Certification, as well as a Visiting Fellowship award in Electroconvulsive Therapy from The University of Pittsburgh, where he helped found the Center for Mindfulness and Consciousness Studies and continues to teach as an Assistant Clinical Professor.
Dr. Thorkelson holds a strong focus on the interface between physical and mental health and has completed clinical training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction with Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, and Saki Santorelli, EdD. He has advanced training and clinical experience with both Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and hypnotherapy. Additionally, Dr. Thorkelson has studied advanced nutrient therapies under Dr. William Walsh, and he has completed foundational coursework in Functional Medicine, training alongside staff from the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine.
Dr. Thorkelson has written several book chapters and co-authored nearly two dozen publications. He has led workshops for Fortune 500 companies, and provided expert opinions for a wide range of media outlets, including, but not limited to, NBC and Today.com, and Men’s Health Magazine.
Fun Fact: When not caring for patients, Dr. Thorkelson enjoys spending time with his family. He recharges by hiking, biking, traveling, and listening to jazz, and he has a special affinity for airplanes and space.
